Living Filtration System

The earthworm’s digestive system and the human small intestine inspired a University of Oregon team to develop a biomimetic drainage system that keeps nutrients in the soil rather than leaving the field in runoff, decreases the amount of fertilizer needed, and improves soil health over time.

The Living Filtration System addresses Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger (#2), Good Health and Well-Being (#3), Clean Water and Sanitation (#6), Responsible Consumption and Production (#12), Climate Action (#13), Life On Land (#15).
